KEEP Toolkit Advanced Video Tool Tutorial:

The Advanced Video Tool offers several new abilities for KEEP users to add their videos to their Snapshots. This tutorial is aimed at answering some of the questions you may have about this tool.

Overview
The process for using the Advanced Video Tool includes three steps: providing a formatted video, including required and/or optional information, and saving it. Only two of these steps (1 and 3) are necessary to put your video into a Snapshot. The steps are as follows:

1. Required Information
A Title for your video, the source of your video and a confirmation that you are permitted to use the video is all you need!

2. Optional Information
Want to change the way your video is presented in KEEP, credit the creator of the video, or add information to make it easier for other KEEP users to access your work? Click on these options to accomplish these tasks.

3. Save
You're Done!

Exploring the Options:
This section explains your display options.

Display Options
Alter the way your video is linked to, or have the video load directly in the page. If you choose to open the video in a new window, you will need to choose how you would like the link to appear in your Snapshot. Your options are the generic video icon shown in the example on the left, you may upload your own thumbnail image, or you can create your own text link.

Video Size
*You will need to enter this information if you choose to embed your video into the page.
What size does your video display at? If you are unsure, you can check with the following methods:
QuickTime - Open your video and select "Window -> Show Movie Info". It will be listed in "Format"
Windows Media Player - Open your video and select "File -> Properties"
A fairly common size for a Video is 320 pixels (width) by 240 pixels (height).

Press Start to Play vs. Autoplay
"Press Start to Play" will require the user to press the play button within the player to start the video. "Autoplay" will begin playing the video after it has downloaded. Use caution when choosing "Autoplay." If you have several videos embeded into your Snapshot, selecting "Autoplay" will cause all of them to start playing at once. This would force your viewer to go through the page and pause every video.

Duration
How long is your video? If it is less than one minute, put a zero in the minute area. Example ("00:45" for forty-five seconds)

Display Title under the video
By un-checking this box, your Title will no longer appear below the video. This is useful if you don't want the bold title name under your video.

Caption
Use this area to place text directly below your video.

Brief Description of your Video
Give a brief synopsis of the subject of your video. Example (This video documents the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning at the Carnegie Foundation.)

Author Information
Credit the creators of you video and make your video easier to find for other KEEP users.

Author
Enter the name or names of the creator(s) here.

Creation Date
When was this video made? Example (05/15/2004)

Copyright
Is there a copyright associated with this video? Example (The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, Creative Commons License)

Tags
This area is for "tagging" your video. Tags are small pieces of text that KEEP can use to help search for your video. Separate each bit of text with a comma. Example (Math, 4th Grade, Palo Alto, Teaching Methods)

Additional Information

The KEEP Toolkit is developing tools that will enhance the KEEP user community. This section contains information that will categorize your video within this community in future revisions of KEEP. This information is voluntary.

Backlink
If you video is being re-purposed from a different site, you can link to the original here.

Type of Video
How would you classify your video? What is the general context of this video in a few words? Example (Student Portfolio, or Classroom Example)

Reflection
Reflection is an area to elaborate on the subject matter of your video.

Transcript
If you have a written transcript of the dialogue within your video, you may upload that file in a .RTF (Rich Text Format). To create a .RTF file, choose "Save As" from the file menu in your text editor (i.e.. Word, WordPerfect, etc.) and select RTF.

Suggested Player
Which player would you like the viewer to use? If you aren't sure, leave it set to unknown.

Framerate
Videos play at a specific speed, referred to as "Frames per Second". This information can be found in the same place as the Video Size.

Codec
You may specify which codec your video uses here. You can read more about codecs in our compression tutorial.

Suggested Bandwidth
Many video files are optimized for a specific connection speed. Generally speaking, larger files require faster connections.

These instructions should be sufficient for operating the Advanced Video Tool within KEEP.  However, it is possible that you may encounter problems.  If this happens, please post your comments into our Forum, along with a good description of your video (file type, length, file size) and we will attempt to answer your questions in a timely manner.
