Using the KEEP ToolKit, Wiki Pages, Word Circle

and Related Web-Based Media to Make Learning and Teaching Public

Even though I still rely on papers and other conventional assignments in my courses at Mills College, I find myself increasingly using the KEEP ToolKit and other web-based tools in my assignments. The reason for this shift stems from my interest in changing from the vertical interaction that traditional assignments foster, namely student-teacher, to a more distributed, horizontal interaction that truly fosters a sense of community in my classes. I want my students to know that they can learn both from me and from each other and that they are accountable to me and to each other. My interest is not new or exclusive. In fact, as you can read on "My Context" snapshot, one of the principles in our program is that teaching and learning ought to be collegial. What is different is the extent to which I can make my students' learning and, especially with my EDUC 353 students, make my teaching and the thinking behind my teaching public by using the KEEP ToolKit, and the tiki (or WordCircle, for 207B).
