Email Address: Judith.Fitzpatrick@Tufts.edu

Degree Program: Bachelor of Arts

Major: International Relations

Concentration: Global Health

Academic Goals:

As an International Relations Major with a specific interest in health disparities in developing African nations, I hope to:

  • Attain a strong academic foundation in international relations, examining the history, politics, economics, and cultures of varying countries in the international system
  • Familiarize myself with the prominent theoretical and methodological approaches to the study of international relations
  • Examine the impact of ideology, culture, national and regional identity, and prejudice on current international affairs
  • Concentrate my studies on the connection between issues of global health and relations within the international community
  • Study Abroad for the duration of my junior year as a Tufts undergraduate. I plan to spend one semester in a spanish-speaking country to gain language proficiency, and another examining public health issues in a developing nation
  • "Cap" my IR concentration by completing an honors thesis focused on independent research of a global health issue

  • Career Goals:

I am very interested in global public health and medicine, and my trip to Ghana has deepened my motivation to pursue these interests in my career. After completing my undergraduate coursework at Tufts, I plan to work in international health policy, focusing on health issues in Africa. In the future, I hope to attend medical school, possibly specializing in infectious disease.

    Personal Goals:

Personally, I will use my experiences as a part of the Ghana Gold 2009 Study Tour to:

  • Shape my perceptions of social responsibility on the community, national, and international level
  • Develop a personal meaning of "active citizenship," and fulfill my duties as a commited member of the global community
  • Attain a greater understanding of the gold mining industry in Ghana and its effects of the health, welfare, economics, and political rights of Ghanaians
  • Further evaluate Ghana's position as an emerging model for democracy in a turbulent West Africa
