by Los Medanos College math faculty: Erich Holtmann, Kwado Poku, Myra Snell, and Pat Wagener.

Team contact: Myra Snell (msnell@losmedanos.edu)

Introduction: Most of the students taking prealgebra in community college have been taught this math before, probably many times before. What can community college math instructors do to make learning stick?

The focus of our study ...

  • Can the findings of math education research be applied to the community college prealgebra classroom?
  • Will staff development combined with classroom-based research produce positive change in the planning, teaching, and learning of basic math skills?
  • What you will find in this site ...

  • the application of math education research to a community college prealgebra course;
  • evidence of the impact of staff development on curriculum, pedagogy, and learning;
  • the results of classroom-based research conducted by prealgebra instructors at Los Medanos College.
  • Whose perspective you will hear ...

  • the facilitator of the Teaching Community (staff developer);

    Instructor's Perspective

    At Los Medanos College, a "Prealgebra Teaching Community" brings faculty together to investigate questions about their students' learning. Erich Holtmann and Pat Wagener, participants in the group, give an overview of its work and discuss their apprehensions about classroom-based research.
