Email Address: Michael.Kremer@Tufts.edu

Degree Program: Bachelor of Arts

Concentration: International Relations

Academic Goals:

As an International Relations major with a concentration on sub-Saharan Africa, my academic goals are as follows:

Gather, read, and form opinions about research and literature from many different schools of thought relating to African politics, development, and economics.

Seek out firsthand knowledge and experiential learning opportunities through travel, interaction with Africans, and attendance at lectures and conferences relating to Africa.

Analyze relationships between different actors in African politics and culture to determine how each of those actors contributes to the formation of political and social structures. These actors include city-dwellers, people in rural areas, businesses, governments, and civil society groups.

Compare my perspective on African affairs as an American to Africans' perspectives on African affairs. In making that comparison, I seek to gain both a deeper understanding of African issues and African approaches to analyzing political or social phenomena.

Career Goals:

I have no idea what I want to do when I graduate from college. I do, however, have two criteria for any job that I might have. The most important trait of any job that I might have in the future is that I enjoy going to work every day. I will absolutely refuse to subject myself to a job that is boring or odious to me, even if that job offers comparatively good pay or benefits. Secondly, I want to have a job in which my work will benefit other people.

These two criteria almost automatically go hand-in-hand. Having a job in which I can see my work making tangible impacts on other peoples' lives would make me enjoy the work, too. Jobs that satisfy both of these requirements exist in many different fields and many different parts of the world. I am open to any and all possibilities, but as of now I do not have an idea of a specific field that I would like to go into.

Personal Goals:

My personal goals center around the broad theme of making myself as educated and informed a citizen as possible. To that end, I strive to be as up to date with current events and as engaged as possible with my surrounding community. I also believe that in order to develop my own opinions about my culture and my life, I must be able to analyze both myself and my culture from many perspectives. Thus, I make an effort to connect with and learn about other cultures and the people who live in them. This connection process is ideally a two way street: in the process of learning about another culture or getting to know a person from another culture, I will also be able to hear their viewpoints and critiques of my culture. This additional lens onto my own culture will give me another angle from which to evaluate my beliefs about myself and the world in which I live, and it will enable me continue to develop my base of knowledge.
