Rewriting the AP Biology Curriculum effort led by Graham Walker, Mandana Sassafar, Julia Khodor, Melanie Berkmen, and Melissa Kosinski-Collins On April 1, 2005, several members of the education group met with Sharon Kay, a member of the eight person committee involved in rewriting the high school AP biology curriculum sponsored by the National Science Foundation. We discussed the design of a concept inventory similar to the BCF focusing on topics required for college-level learning. We further grappled with such questions as increasing the laboratory component of the course while maintaining student accessibility, making biology more interdisciplinary, improving the training of teachers in charge of instructing the course, and decreasing the overall number of topics covered. The incoporation of evolution as an underlying theme throuhgout all modules was also a discussion topic. Graham, Julia, and Melissa attended the national meeting for AP biology reform on April 29th and 30th. We presented information on the construction of the biology concept framework and how to design a curriculm based around it. We discussed how to use the shape game and structure tutorials in class, and some of the common misconceptions we have encountered in our biology students. We hope to continue our involvement with NSF AP biology redesign committee as their project progresses.
