My Experiences One of the most interesting things I learned was the fact that free blacks were instrumental in helping slaves escape. Slavery had an affect on the lives of all Americans that lived at that time. I sensed the pain, suffering, fear, and despiration of my ancestors. Steal Away

Final Thoughts Slavery might have affected African Americans directly but affected others indirectly. My Lesson Plan My lesson is on "Slave Spirituals. The spirituals served many purposes, especially during attempted escapes to freedom. They contained special messages which included the time of departure, routes, directions, and other essential information. Activity #1 After listening to and studying the meaning of several "Slave Spirituals", share the meaning of one song, write another verse to the song and perform it. Activity #2 You will travel back in time to the 1800's and write a diary from the perspective of a slave who escaped on the Underground Railroad. Your diary should include factual historical names, dates, places, and information as well as your personal feelings, observations, ideas, and opinions.
