How is the Developement of the Eye Related to a Specific Species?

9th - 10th Grade

Introduction

Evolution is responsible for the amount of diversity seen in life. Evolution is the process in heritable traits transformation and then being passed onto the next generation. It is this process that then can cause the development of a new species. It is Charles Darwin's theory of natural selection that is most respected in the concept of evolution. This theory states that it is nature that chooses the most favorable traits that should be passed onto the next generation. Eventually this then could lead to the development of a species, one that is more capable of surviving.

The development of the eye is different for every organism. The human eye is considered to be the most complex eye to exist, where as an earthworm has a more simplistic one.

While doing your own research focus on the following questions:

What actually is evolution and is the theory of natural selection applied to it?

What are the parts and functions of the eye?

How it the eye of you assigned organism develop?

Is it a simplistic organ or a more complex one?

How does natural selection relate to your organism's eye?

Learning goals

By the end of this project you should be able to exlpain that concept of evolution and how the theory of natural selection applies to it. You should then be able to apply these theories to other organisms in the development of their eyes. Then once that is done you should be albe to determine if there is a need for your organism to develop a more advanced eye, and if there is not then why not?

Requirements

This lesson will be divided into three parts.

Part 1: This will require that you first learn the basic concepts about evolution and Darwin's theory of natural selection. It is not necessary to remember everything, however it is important to be able to apply certain concepts of evolution to that of the development of the eye of a specific organism.

Part 2: You also must be able to explain the functions of the eye, and label a diagram of the human eye. Since the human eye is probably the most complex you will have to learn the parts and functions in order to be able to do a comparison to other organisms with simpler eyes.

Part 3: You and a partner, of your choosing, will then be given an organism to study. The in a power point presentation explain a brief history of the given organism, using the theories of evolution, but also focus on the eye of the organism. You must then explain how the organism uses their eye, and decide if it is too be considered one of complexicity or simplicity. Also it is important to understand why your organism has the eye it does. Decide if you think that your organism needs their eye to evolve or not.

Remember: It is important to fully research you project. Internet sources can be a great help, however it is important to establish which ones are more reliable. Those sites that have .org or .net are reliable in their information than a .com site. Make sure that you also give full credit to your cited sources for plagerism is never acceptable.

Assessment

Attached is the rubric that will be used to grade the overall project. Remember you will not only be graded on the content of the information, but also how you apply it and the teaching methods you use to help others learn. Creativity is a key. Try to make your methods different than what is normally done.

Thinking skills

Thinking is the key to success for this project. It is important to remember that simply reading information and writing about it is not enough. It is suggested that you read about evolution and about the origin of the eye for your organism then try to make a connection between the two. Application is important in which you must try to challenge yourself to think to the next level in order for your audience to learn the actual concepts being spoken about. Attached is a link that provides great study skills if you feel lost about how to approach this project. I recommend that you look at it no matter what.
