Introducing Team #1:

Our Name Says it all.....

*Kevin Bogart, Mary Cordell, Staci Rogers and Brent Moore*

Who We Are.....

Me in Dubai last summer

Staci Rogers

I am a 20 year old junior, and am from Terre Haute, IN. I'm majoring in Biology and minoring in Psychology and Chemistry. I'm the oldest of six, and love spending time with my family and friends.I also love to travel. This summer I spent two months in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, where my dad is currently working. It was quite an experience! After I graduate I hope to attend Medical School, but am unsure of what I want to specialize in.

Mary Cordell

I am 21 years old and in my senior year here at IUB. I am from South Bend, IN and the younger of two girls. My older sister is expecting her first baby this August, something that is very exciting for my family. I am pursuing a BFA (bachelor of fine arts) in painting, and minors in art history, biology, and spanish. I am considering becoming a medical illustrator in the future, but have not yet made definite plans following graduation. Besides painting, I enjoy sports (basketball and soccer), travelling (I have been to six other countries), and spending time with my friends.

Brent Moore

I am a 23 year old graduate student in the Clinical Exercise Physiology programs through the school of HPER. I am from Indianapolis, Indiana; however, I am currently residing in Martinsville, Indiana. I got my Bachelor's degree in Exercise Science in August of 2004. After I get my Masters degree, I either plan on landing a job in the corporate physiology field or the cardiovascular testing field in preparing me for medical school hopefully down the road. Whenever I get the free time away from studying and classes, I enjoy playing poker with my friends. Also, I like to watch and participate in almost all sports, including basketball.

Enjoying Nikko, Japan

Kevin Bogart

I am the old man of the group and currently work full time as a research Scientist in the Center for Genomics and Bioinformatics at IUB. I'm taking the class in my spare time to gain a better understanding of human physiology as I'm considering new involvement in medical work. I am originally from Louisville, KY, though now think of Bloomington as my home. As for fun, I enjoy socializing with friends, travelling the world (I just returned with Japan, Thailand, and Cambodia over the winter), and running / Yoga to keep myself in shape.

Exams:

Excerpts from our group debriefing after exams:

Reflection and Thoughts about Exam 1:

Kevin: I think we could have started studying earlier in the week. And actually spent more time as a group studying. Perhaps even having one person lead a discussion on different lectures / case studies. In taking the group portion of the exam, I think we could have used the book or lecture materials more (I kind of forgot about this until later). I think we can approach the group portion as a chance to discuss questions where there were different answers, thinking of it not to find out who is right, but how to come to an answer we all agree on.

Brent: To be completely honest, I did not study for this exam hardly at all because I had two major tests before this one and by the time I studied for those as much as I needed to, I was burnt out of even studying for this one. So definately, I could have started studying a lot earlier for this test next time. I don't know if its a great idea to put only one person in charge of each subject; I think that we would beneift more from combining all of our ideas on each topic. On the group portion I agree with Kevin how we should have used the book a lot more, I actually forgot we were even allowed to. For next test, we should go through

each question and circle what the majority of the group had. Then with the remaining time, go through each question again and decide if you think thats correct, and if not, look through the notes/book for the answer.

Mary: Although I did study for this test, I did not feel as though I was as prepared as I should have been. As Kevin and Brent will probably suggest, it would be a good idea for our team to set aside more time for studying so that our goal resides more in understanding the material rather than completing required tasks. Taking the first test made me realize how important it is to thoroughly understand the material not only at the surface, but also deeper implications that our knowledge could have as we approach individual cases. For future exams I hope we can increase communication within the group prior to the test, so that on the day of the exam we all feel confident to discuss our answers and arrive at the correct conclusions. I think that if each individual member can try to grasp the knowledge on their own, when we work as a group we can clarify and strengthen the knowledge that everyone brings in the door with them.

Staci: I missed the first exam due to an injury and I feel really bad that I wasn't able to be there to help out my team. Hopefully I am able to make it up on future exams!

Exam #1 Ideas for Improvement:

Kevin: I think it may be good for us to meet with the professor as a group to go over questions from the first exam that we missed or didn't understand.

Brent: I think we can spend more time on content during group assignments, rather than sentence structure/grammar. I feel like we spend more time trying to word a

sentence than actually the content of the sentence. And, we can also prepare better individually for group assignments.

Mary: I think that we should try to understand assignments before meeting as a group because I think if we try to answer things on our own, when we get together we

can spend more time making sure we all understand the concept, rather than

looking for the information we need.

Staci: I think that we would all benefit greatly from attending office hours regularly. Also, I agree that better preparation individually on group assignments would be beneficial.

Exam 2

Kevin:

How I thought we did better on this exam: I thought we really did a much better job on the group section of the exam. We worked quickly to figure out problems that we had different answers and quickly worked through them. I thought we did an excellent job of focusing on finding the correct answer and debating the possible answers, coming to the best group answer possible. I feel this was reflected in our much better group grade for this exam.

Suggestions for further improvement:I think we are all doing less than we expected on the individual portion of the exam, though when we work together we do quite well. I would suggest that this would point to the fact that we can help one another improve on the individual portion of the exam as well by finding more time to review the material together. Possible as we go along the exam period rather than just right before the exam.

Mary: I feel as a team we are learning to work well together and this is reflected in how much higher our team score is than our individual scores. I feel that we could improve our individual performance by spending more time together discussing cases and re-inforcing each others' knowledge. I find the format of the exam/questions to be challenging and I think if we frame our studying more closely to the exam question format we may be able to improve our individual scores, which in turn would contribute to higher team scores also.

Brent: Similar to Mary, I feel like we are working together better as a team. Obviously this is true due to our team scores being exceptionally better than our individual scores. I believe these tests are pretty complex and not straight forward as we expected. Not only do we have to answer questions that are given to us in text, but we also need to make conclusions to case studies from information we already know. This is the area I think we can significantly improve in by studying together before the tests and reasoning outloud amongst each other.

Staci: This was my first exam in this class, so I finally got to experience it first hand :) I didn't do as well as I hoped, but I thought that as a team we worked really well together and as a result scored pretty well on the team portion. I think that our overall strategy of going through the questions and comparing our answers and then focusing on the ones that we had different answers for worked fairly well. I think that if we can all improve our individual scores then we will be good to go.

Exam 3

Staci: I thought that this exam went better than the last, but I still didn't do as well on the individual portion as I would have liked to. As a team we did very well. We haven't studied for any of the exams as a group yet, and I think that maybe we should give it a shot and see if it benefits us on the next exam. Since the overall pattern on each exam has been lower individual scores than team scores we should maybe try and study as a team, and see if it benefits us at all.

Mary: I was very happy with how well we performed as a team on this exam. The general upward trend of our team scores is something that I am proud of because it shows our improvement as a team also. Like everyone else in team one, I would like to raise my individual score for the next exam. It seems that among our team we have a fairly good grasp of the content of physiology. However, we are not utilizing each other as resources enough for learning before taking the exam, so we are not seeing the level of achievement that we have combined in the individual scores. I think we have a great chance to improve for exam four by spending some time studying together, which will require some schedule coordination, but I think it definitely will be worth it!

Brent: Exam 3, I felt went a lot better than the other two individually for me, but as a team, I feel we can prepare better by using each other as resources more. We haven't really studied for any of the exams as a group yet, but I feel that it could be very beneficial due to the overall trend of better team scores than individuals. To maximize our grades in this class, I feel like we have to do this for the next two, especially the final exam.

Ideas for Improvement on Exam 4:

I think that we all have pretty much agreed that on the next exam we should study as a team prior to taking it since our team preformance is consistently better than our individual preformance.

Exam #4

Staci:Well, we finally studied as a group, but ironically it only paid off indivually. On individual exam scores our team was second, but as a group we did poorly compared to everyone else. I think this had a lot to do with the fact that a couple of the ones that we missed we thought we were sure on and didn't even take the time to look them up in our books. However, we tried our best and that's really all that you can do. Overall it went okay.

Mary: Although our team score tended to be lower than our individual score, I'm so glad we finally studied as a team because this really helped clarify the difference between obstructive and restrictive conditions for me. I was a little happier with my score on this exam. Looking back, this was one of the better exams for our team, even though our team score was a little lower than we might have hoped for.

Kevin: I was definately happier with my indiviual score on this exam. I think that group studying elped us all a bit though the average group score was lower than the average team. I feel we're finally getting the hang of this stuff though, right when we're about to finish :(

Brent: I was a little disappointed with my individual part of the exam. I felt I should have done a lot better. As a group, we finished lower than the class average. Hopefully, I will be able to end on a positive note and do better on the final.

Where we are right now:

4/5/06: As a team we have been working great together, we just finished taking Exam 3 earlier this week and today we did Grand Rounds. We all have a sense of accomplishment in everything that we have done so far. We definatly still have areas that we are hoping to improve on. Everyone for the most part has been attending office hours regulary and it is definatly reflected in the grades of our assignments. Now we are just focusing on having a strong finish to the semester, as we are finally starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

4/26/06: As of right now we are all pretty stressed out. We have our hudge project due on Friday, and all are stressed out about finals. However, it's nice to know that we are finally almost finished with the semester.

Case Presentation Plan

The effects of alcohol consumption are familiar to all of us and can often adversely affect the IU student population. One example of this was the tragic death of Seth Korona, an IU Freshman who died after suffering from a skull fracture incurred while doing a keg stand at Theta Chi fraternity house on IU’s campus. Examples like this are far too prevalent at college institutions across the country and point to a need to better educate students of the negative physiological effects of excessive alcohol consumption. We will additionally discuss chronic effects of alcohol abuse, sex differences in alcohol response, and the physiology of a hangover. We will conclude by discussing the factors that relate to blood alcohol content and legal limits to give students a realistic view of where they may stand on a typical night of drinking.

Summary

Our Overall Thoughts About this Class:

Staci: Overall, this class went a lot better than I initially thought that it was going to. It was definatly a hudge adjustment having to rely on other people, since I have never had to work in a group-based learning environment before. I feel that our group was very lucky in that we all got along well, and had members who were all willing to step up and take responsibility for different things at different times. This class definatly taught me a lot about working with other people.

Mary: This class was a lot different than I expected. I feel that I gained just as much experience in interacting in a group setting as I did with integrating physiological concepts. Our group had several unique hurdles to deal with as each member had special circumstances at one time or another, but I'm glad that as a team we pulled through in a fairly successful manner. P431 is one of the most unique classes I have taken, since it is structured so differently than courses in my major area (painting) in which all accountability resides on individual achievement.

Kevin: For me the hardest (and most unexpected) part of this class was the group component. I like mary feel like I learned more about group work dynamics and how to make them efficient and productive than I did about physiology. Though I do feel I learned about a lot about physiology as well. Overall, I was pleased that our group worked well together, got along, was tyoically prepared and interested in learning the material. I definately feel like I made a few friends, in the process which is not a bad thing.

Brent: I don't really think this class was a good fit for me. This is just because I learn better as an individual and not as a group. I'm the type of person that likes to do things when I want to do them and not so much when every one else wants to. I really think this class should have not been for people of our age because we are old enough now not to have to work in teams to get things done. I feel I could have done a lot better and enjoyed this class alot more if I got things done individually.
