Team 8 Blog!!

Here we will include our feelings about the class, learning styles, comments, observations, and other random things, which will be added to frequently. Please date your entries!

[January 27, 2005]

Greetings! I think we can use this blog as a sort of "team journal" where we can post pretty much anything. So, to begin, aside from our grades thus far I'm really enjoying the class. The material got a little more in-depth on Wednesday, but it's great to get the basics down first so that we can see how everything fits together. One very important comment: Dr. Kumar is amazing! I went to his office hours yesterday mainly to just say hi and see where his office was. I ended up staying there for 2 hours! He is great at analyzing the case studies and he makes the process of how to approach them very clear. I think we (mainly me) were looking at the cases from the wrong perspective. Rather than approach them as a diagnosis, we should analyze what is going on in the system at the time of the observations, and determine the most logical approach to return the system to equilibrium. I don't want to ruin the ending, but the best way to treat the patient in the first GRAND ROUNDS is to administer a saline solution via an IV. More on that tomorrow! See you guys soon!

Rich

Team 8 Goals: My Goals

-Holleh: "We have all had the basic science classes. Now is the turning point where we start to learn how to integrate it into practical applications...the things that some of us want to do for the rest of our lives. I want to learn how to think critically on these case studies."

-Kathleen "Similar to Holleh, I'd like to be able to take the information I've learned over throughout my science education and use it to analyze problem solving situations. I also hope to use our discussion time as a team to learn from my peers and reflect on new ideas."

-Ari: "This class provides one of those great opporitunities: learning a new way to think about and process information. We have spent the past few years we have been learning the basics of biology, chemistry, and physics, and memorizing the needed information. Now, a memorized fact will not automatically give us a correct answer. I think that the most important thing we will learn in this class is how to take in necessary facts, utalize them, and sythesize a coherant answer for the given situation."

-Rich: "Human Physiology with Dr. Schlegel is a great opportunity to take a different approach to the learning/thinking process. One frustrating aspect of most classes offered at IU (and probably every other school) is the amount of time spent memorizing facts that we will not remember after graduation and that could be readily looked up in a book. Instead of learning facts, this class focuses on the learning process as a whole. This is a much better life skill than specific numbers and random facts. Also, I love the group environment. Everything that is done in professional fields after college is done in some sort of group. Working with a group is a great experience, and it seems to be working very well for us!"

-Beckie: "My goal for this class is two-fold. First, I want to move from just memorizing facts to being able to apply my acquired knowledge to real-life situations. Utilizing office hours, my teammates, and case studies will help me transition to a more applied way of learning. Second, I want to embrace the idea of working in a group setting. The unique teaching style of this class is an excellent way to learn not only the presented subject, but also a way to learn more about yourself and how you fit into the dynamics of a group setting."

Creativity Consult Holleh Husseinzadeh

Director of Get R' Done Kathleen Shifley

Physiological Philosopher Ari Nowacek

Slapper of Sense into People Rich Facko

Examples of student work

Quote from our ER Lucy/Carter case study in class:

"Because of Lucy's multiple stab wounds to the neck, chest, and abdomen, the homeostatically-regulated variable of blood pressure was most compromised. Arterial baroreceptors would have detected the low blood pressure and sent a signal to the CNS (Integrating Center). The CNS would have sent signals to the arteries to induce vasoconstriction and to the heart to increase rate..all of these factors might have worked to restore systemic blood pressure, had she not been "bleeding out" through multiple wounds, experiencing severe hemorraging..."

There once was a piece of my heart, it died and became infarc. I went to team 8 and they made me feel great. So now I'm not lost in the dark.

I have a contractile cell, and it's really working so well. Some ions go in, then contraction begins, my gosh physiology 's swell.
