Team 9

Our adventures in P431

Who Is Team 9??

Andrew Burns

With a little luck this will be my fourth and final year at IU. I am from Monticello Indiana, which is located a half hour north of Laffayette. I came to IU on a full ride scholarship for ROTC, but I have long since quit the program but decided to stay at IU. My first major was Biology but after a year I switched to Athletic Training and I got into the program. It is a great program and I learned a lot and I have a lot of great experiences from it. However, once again it was not for me. It prompted me to hopefully become a Physicians Assistant. I have applied to several schools, 1 in Indiana and 2 in South Florida. Hopefully I will get into one of those schools and that is were I will be next year. GO COLTS GO PACERS

Beka Fagg

This is my second year at IU, I am majoring in Biology and I hope to graduate in May of 2006. I transfered to IU last august after spending my first two years after high school in Manhattan studying Fashion at the Fashion Institute of Technology where I earned an associates in Fashion Merchandising. I transfered here because I decided that I would much rather study science than fashion. After I get my bachelors from IU I plan on attending dental school. Someday when I am finally all done with school I would like to be a pediatric dentist and maybe have my own practice or work for a University. Either way I would really like to be able to continue to go on medical mission trips around the world. And soemday I would also like to get married and have a family.

Amee Soni

I am a junior biology major, chemistry minor. I am very involved on campus. I am in a sorority (Alpha Delta Pi) where I hold the position of Guard/Chaplain, I am the Asian American Association programming chair, I am a member of the Indian Student Association, I am a UTI for L112, Biological Mechanisms and I was a pre-med volunteer at the Bloomington Hospital. I also am a member of APO a service fraternity. I love to dance and travel. My family travels a lot. I am very close to my family, especially my brother Raj. I would eventually like to attend medical school in hopes of becoming an O.B.G.Y.N. or a pediatrition.

Casey Jarrett

I am currently a Junior at the lovely Indiana University. I plan to go on to Dental School if everything works out the way I would like it to. I was in a fraternity but we got kicked off for many of reasons. I have a very large family with an older brother, and sister, two older step sisters, 3 younger half sisters, and 1 younger half brother. My step-father is a dentist, so that is the reason I got interested into the profession. I particpate in many on-campus activities and find my self very involved. However, my number one love, like Andrew, are the Colts and Pacers. If things go right we will be celebrating two championships a year from now. Peyton is MVP forever.

Lamia Nuseibeh

I am a master's student in the Clinical Exercise Physiology department in the school of HPER. I received my undergraduate degree here as well in Fitness Specialist. I work as a personal trainer for the YMCA, a fitness specialist at the Health Center, teach fitness classes for HPER, and am an exercise leader for 14 clients in the Adult Fitness Program run by my graduate program. I am a fitness NUT and love helping people achieve their fitness/wellness goals in order to live a more healthy, happy lifestyle. When I am done with this program, I plan on getting a second master's degree in Fitness Management and then one day running my own "one-stop-shop" rehab center. Most of all, however, I want to get married to a very intelligent, dedicated, loving man and have my own family to care for.

Our First Class Together

January 10, 2005

We were seperated into our teams and introduced ourselves to each other. We also exchanged e-mails. We also took our resting heart rates and other information for the Heart Rate Data assignment.

Team Member Thoughts:

Andrew: "I was very nervous about meeting my group members."

Beka: "I was glad we all seemed to get along right away."

Casey: "I was ecstatic about meeting my group members, but nervous they wouldn't like me!"

Lamia: "I thought at first that being in groups was going to be a waste of time."

Amee: "I didn't know what to expect when I got to class. When I found out that we would be working in teams I didn't really like the idea. Then I met the members of my team and I felt a lot better."

Tests

Exam 1:

Lamia: "Very hard, but interesting questions. We worked well together, but I think we should study more together next time."

Amee: "Material that was similar to class material. It was fair we just need to know the information a little more solidly then we did this time around. Studying together as well as being serious while doing case studies will help us."

Casey: "The test was very hard, but I feel we will derfinetly improve in the future. In fact I guarentee it."

Rebekah: "The test was hard but I definently think we all worked well together on the group part. The only thing I would do different besides study more, it take more time on the group section to look up more of the answers just to be sure we answered them correctly."

Andrew: "The first exam was really difficult but it is over and i'm glad the first one is out of the way so I know what to expect."

Exam 2:

Lamia: "I went to two office hours, the review section and read the chapter twice so I felt more prepared this time. Nilay and Adam are SO helpful!! I am proud of how our group did on the test!"

Amee: "I went to every office hour offered. It helped a lot! I wish each office hour had different information along with the review because there was a lot of repitition but, it was very helpful! We did a lot better on this exam and we worked a lot better together. I think we will improve even more on the next exam. It is trully a learning experience to take exams in this class."

Casey: "The office hours help so much, I am going to start going to everyone I possibly can now, we did really well and I think this is the trend we were looking for."

Rebekah: "This test went much better than the last. I knew what the format was going to be like this time so I felt like I could prepare a little better. Although we did very well as a group on this test my individual score was not as good as I would have liked."

Andrew: "I dont know if this exam was easier of if we were just better prepared. I thought our group score will be much better than the first exam. I like where we are going with this."

Exam 3:

Lamia: "I thought this exam was fairly difficult. However, I think we are improving working as a group and I know I now know how to prepare a bit better."

Amee: "The exam went well. I ended up staying up till 4am studying but I did feel prepared! I read the chapter again, I did all of the case studies again, and I went over my notes. I'm glad everything is over, this week was very hectic! Office hours seem to always help. I also liked the material and understood it so I'm sure that helped. I didn't like it at first but I really like how we have to do case studies on the exams. Don't get me wrong they are really hard but I feel like it is really helpful for the future and even now. You can see reasons for what is happening. You don't just get information to memorize you actually apply it and see how it fits in to life. I did pretty well on the exam and I have been progressively doing better. I hope to continue the trend of doing better and better on exams. I think we all know how to work together and how to prepare for exams so the exams are going a lot better."

Casey: "The test was pretty hard, and I was suprisingly excited when I saw the scores. We did real well as a team and I was happy the way that I performed on the individual test. I hope we can keep improving and do real well on the next test."

Rebekah: "As a team we did very well on this exam. However I personally did not prepare well enough. I plan to do better on the next test."

Andrew: "Once again I was pleased with what we accomplised as a group. We communicate really well and challenge each other for the right answers. My individual was not as high as I would have liked. I will have to work harder for the next two exams. Overall I was pleased though.

Exam 4:

Lamia: "I felt this one went well for me and mostly as a group. I didn't agree with how some of the team section was done, but the majority of it went well."

Amee: "Considering the circumstances, I think it went ok. I was really prepared but the fact that I was extremely worked up during the whole exam didn't help."

Casey: "I think I did really well on the test, and found out that I did when I recieved a 94, I am very happy with this I have improved every test"

Rebekah: "I think this exam went okay. But I am glad it is over. Our team did pretty well, but my individual score wasn't very good."

Andrew: "I am extremely dissapointed in myself. I know this material much more than my exam scores read. I think i might be preparing too much for the exams. everytime i am in doubt in an answer i choice the incorrect answer between two choices. ITS FRUSTRATING. I know i deserve a B in this class but due to my failures i will be stuck with a B no doubt."

After the first exam Team 9 relaxes at Nick's for some lunch, some beer and great atmosphere.

Team 09 Goals

Goal 1:

Expand our knowledge in the intriguing field of physiology

Goal 2:

Work collaboratively, incorporating each of our learning styles

Goal 3:

Apply the knowledge we learned in this class with us in the future

Team Member Sound-off

Week 1:

Lamia: "I thought the first week was a little confusing, as what Dr. Schlegel was wanting us to do wasn't always clear. However, I was happy we were starting with the physiology of the cardiovascular system, as that is my favorite system in the body!"

Rebekah: "I was alittle overwhelmed the first week of classes because it seemed as though we had a lot of little projects due and I wasn't really sure what was to be done in groups and what wasn't. But I was so glad to find that all of my team mates seemed very nice."

Andrew: "I knew coming into the class that we were going to be placed into groups, which scared me at first. However our group has a very broad background and I think that will help us in the end. The projects that we have done together are a little different than what I am used to, but i am excited to start on the cardiovascular system."

Casey: "I had no idea that we were going to be in groups. At first I didn't know if I would like it, but when we all got to talking right away I knew it would be okay. Everyone seems like the have a good attitude going into the class so we will see how we work together."

Amee: "I didn't really understand how we were suppose to learn physiology through group work. I haven't had to do group work since middle school maybe high school. This is the first college class, and actually class in general that is completely based on group work. I'm worried because I don't really know how I'm going to learn anything in a group. I always think of a group as doing a big project but not as an entire class learning situation. I am keeping an open mind and hopefully this way of learning will be good, although, I am questioning it as of now. The good thing is I really like my group and if nothing else I will gain four new friends! I was really nervous about who would be in my group along with everything else and I am happy that I have the group I do."

Week 2:

Lamia: "Now that I am getting to know my group, I am very thankful I am with who I am with. They are nice, personable, and willing to put the time into our projects to do well in the class."

Rebekah: "I was out of the US for this whole week, I hope my team mates don't hate me for leaving them with all the work."

Andrew: "We got together a couple times this week which was nice. I have found our group to be very responsible and trustworthy, and I hope Rebekah had a wonderful experience in Nicaragua.

Casey: "This week we all started getting together to work, I feel we are all different parts that came together to work like a well made automobile. We are ready for the big race and enter our car in the Indy 500, I am excited for our group experience, and our future activities together!!!"

Amee: Initially I was worried about how we would do group projects. Usually one person does all the work and it is a huge burden! However we have been getting together and everyone is more then willing to do things and it's great! Everybody contributes and that is great. There is usually one person who doesn't do anything, but that has not been a problem at all and I don't think it will be. What is due when has been a little tricky because there are so many assignments but hopefully we'll get use to the amount of assignments and how the class works. I'm more excited to see what happens now because the group is GREAT!"

Week 3:

Lamia: "This week introduced some interesting concepts about the conduction of electrical activity in the heart. I wish we did more interaction on Friday, however. I am also content with our Team Snapshot."

Beka: "I had so much reading to catch up on this week, but I think I am finally getting it all done."

Andrew: "The electrical activity material is quite confusing to me but i still have a lot of reading and studying to do so hopefully I will understand it better. Our group meeting Tuesday went well and as usual it was very effecient"

Amee: "I am still questioning the group concept. I feel like I would learn a lot more if I had to do everything on my own. I feel like I'm slacking off because there are other people who do things along with me whereas I am use to doing everything on my own. The heart activity stuff was a good review. I studied all of this for the MCAT so I really understand what is going on."

Casey: "The Electrical activity is quite hard, however I think with the help of each other we are starting to learn and understand it, the test will be interesting"

Week 4:

Lamia: "Monday was really interesting! I enjoyed how Dr. Kumar discussed the Na -K pumps and I enjoyed defending our position in the 'trial'! I also love learning about ECG's, so I was happy we got to work with them in the lab."

Beka: "This week our lab is about EKG's and in doing our pre-lab Lamia was very helpful because she really seemed to understand everything and was able to help me better understand it."

Andrew: " Lamia has been, as usual, very helpful with my understanding of the EKG material. I am really looking forward to a change of pace with the lab Friday I think it will be very interesting"

Amee: "I've always wanted to use an EKG so it was really fun to do EKG's in lab! I actually know how to read an EKG, which I think is really cool! I am really looking forward to the labs in this class. I really think I will learn something that will be very useful to me in the future. I like doing things that I can see being helpful to me. Everything is still a bit of a review so it's good because I really understand everything as of now."

Casey: "I was not able to participate in the ECG lab, because of family reasons, but my team caught me up on what I missed and I felt like I never left."

Week 5:

Amee: "The exam didn't go so well. I thought I did good on it but I didn't. I'm glad the exam went the way it did though. Everything is a learning experience. I think we realized our strengths and weaknesses as well as our group members strengths and weaknesses. There were some surprises in how everyone did but again this will only make us stronger. I think we have a perspective of what we need to do and how the other members in our group take exams. Like I had said before I feel like I'm slacking, although I did study really hard for the exam I think if I would have been able to do more in the group right off the bat I wouldn't have had to, I guess, cram in a way for the exam. All the activities would have helped me along the way instead of reading through it the week of the exam, gradually going through it by doing the activities may have helped. I think we just need to work together more instead of individuals doing everything and also continue studying individually. "

Rebekah: "I was a little nervous about our exam because I was not very sure what exactly the exam would be over. I thought our team worked really well together. It was definently not an easy exam, but at least I feel a little better about the next exams because now I kind of know what to expect."

Lamia: "The exam was very, very hard. We worked extremely well together, discussing answers and helping each other understand the material, at least I felt they helped me. I didn't feel great walking away from the test, but I studied my toosh off and that's all I can do."

Andrew: " Well I was pretty dissapointed with our exam scores, but I on the positive side I know that we will do much better next time. We can use this as motivation and i'm sure it will work in our favor, Next week when we meet up we can discuss about how we can be better prepared for the next exam.

Casey: "The exam was terrible, as I am sure everyone has said. We didnt prepare correctly but I feel that it will be fixed for the next test. I am confident that we will pull it together and move on up the ratings in the class. Everyone was pretty shocked on where we were in the class, so if I were a betting man, I'm going to say we do not end up there again."

Week 6:

Lamia: "I am working very hard this time (even though I worked my butt off the first time) to do well on the next exam. I am interested in the material, so it should be fun to learn even more about the CV system."

Rebekah: "The last exam did not go very well so I am definently going to try a lot harder to keep on top of things for the next exam. So far I am understanding the new stuff but Im nervous because the exams are cumulative so I also want to go back and make sure I understand the old stuff as well. "

Andrew: " Since the last exam didnt go as planned, I am studying a lot harder this time by goin over the case studies much more. This material seems easier than the homeostatsis so it should be better to study."

Casey: "To say the least the last exam didnt go as to plan so I think that we are all going to work a lot harder not only for ourselves but for the good of the team"

Amee: "I went to office hours and it was really helpful! I met a few students who had previously been in the class and they told me they were able to do well in the class because of the office hours so I hope they help. I think they will."

Week 7:

Lamia: "The application Friday was really easy. However, I enjoyed Nilay's lecture, as always. I am getting nervous for the test next week but I am working hard to learn the material. I hope with all the application material we have to have done for next week I will have time to study."

Rebekah: "Our application this week was pretty simple althought I am not very good at taking BP measurements (sorry Amee). I was surprised how difficult it was to actually know what to listen for. I really enjoy doing these applications because they allow us to apply the things we have learned."

Andrew: "For me the lab application was pretty simple, I have had a lot of experience with BP but it was really good practice to keep that skill up.

Casey: "It seemed that everyone had taken blood pressure before except me but it was fun to learn how to do it, and to learn that I am not as unhealthy as I thought I was"

Amee: "Taking blood pressure was fun! I really like doing things that are applicable to our future. I hope we do more labs like this. I actually learned something very useful. By the way it's ok Becca ;)"

Week 8:

Lamia: "I think the test went pretty well. I felt that I worked REALLY hard this week, going to two office hour, the review and reading the chapter for a second time. However, you never know..."

Rebekah: "I was very nervous about the exam this week. I had another exam on tues so I was worried that I wouldn't be able to concentrate enough on studying for this exam. And I definently could not afford to do as bad as I did on the last exam. After the exam I really wasnt sure how I did. I think we definently took more time this time to go through all the questions we were unsure about so I hope we will do better than the last test."

Andrew: "I am kind of worried about the exam, I dont think my individual went very well but I think our group exam went much better this time. We are really coming together in group work.

Casey: "The office hours definetely helped on this exam, I think I did pretty good on the individual but I think we all did real well as a group. It showed that we all worked harder in preparation for this test, lets hope it pays off."

Amee: "I don't think I did really good on the exam. A lot of my answers were different then what the group decided. I think we definately did better as a group, though. We worked through more questions then last time, even questions we all agreed on. I guess hope for the best prepare for the worst."

Week 9:

Lamia: "I am happy with the results of the exam, as we all worked really hard for this one. I am really excited to begin on the renal system, as I have a lot to learn still and I'm anxious to learn it!"

Rebekah: "I was happy with our test scores this time. I think it is pretty good that our group went from getting one of the lowest scores on the first exam to getting one of the higher scores on the second. "

Andrew: " When we got the exam back I was really excited. We did much better this time. All of that hard work payed off and I hope we can keep it up."

Casey: "I wanted to jump up and down when I saw how we did, seeing how we were last on the previous test and all the way to third, NEAT-O- GANG!!!!"

Amee: "I am very happy with the results of this exam. I did a lot better then I thought. We did a lot better as a group as well. I thought we would do better as a group. I'm glad this exam went better. I know better now what I'm doing. I think the next exam will go even better then this exam. Taking exams in this class is trully a learning experience. How to work effectively together on the exam is also a learning experience and we're getting better at it."

Week 10:

Lamia: "We started on the renal system this week and I am having a difficult time with the information. However, I am extremely interested in it, so I hope I can get it down through office hours and the readings."

Rebekah: "The renal system is not as interesting to me as the past sections have been but maybe after I learn a little more about it I will find it interesting. "

Andrew: "So far the renal system has been pretty challenging. This will be the first time that I will have to review my anatomy skills to get a better understanding of the material."

Casey: "Now we are onto the renal system, and I have no idea what is going on so I am going to have to do a lot of studying before the test"

Amee: "I really like this material! I really understand it and I know this is going to help me on the MCATs. I studied this material over the summer for the MCATs and now, because the information is given in more detail I understand it so much better!"

Week 11:

Lamia: "I went to office hours last week and I think it really helped. I am now reading the chapter for the second time and it is finally making sense. I am nervous about the exam, though."

Rebekah: "I am having some trouble completely understanding the whole renal process. It is kind of confusing."

Andrew: "The renal system is still a bear, but I think with a better understanding of the pathway and case studies it will be managable for the exam, I hope."

Casey: "Office hours really helped again, they inform us on all of the little things that go on with the renal system, because I think the reading is rather confusing. The case studies are getting pretty hard but we are all working on them together so it is going okay"

Amee: "Reading the chapter has really helped a lot especially for this material. I feel good about the exam but I also have another exam and I have been concentrating on that material so I hope everything goes well and I have enough time to prepare for this exam."

Week 12:

Lamia: "I am getting nervous for the exam, as this is a whole new area for me. However, the information is very interesting, so it is making learning it more enjoyable! I'm just hoping that we can do well again as a team, as well as myself in the individual part."

Rebekah: "I am nervous about the test this friday. I have been reading a lot in our book and trying to understand the case studies."

Andrew: "I am worried about the exam this week, I know our team will succeed I just hope I can have a better individual performance. We are working really well together on the exams and I am sure we will do fine."

Casey: "This is test week so we are all working really hard, and working together. I spent alot of time reading and reading again. However, the best thing that I can do is go to the office hours because those are really helping me understand the details of everything"

Amee: "I'm really worried because I know the material but I haven't had time to study properly!!!! I studied for another exam towards the beginning of this week and I got sick on Wednesday and was unable to do anything that day so a whole day worth of studying is gone!! I went to the review session on Tuesday and it helped a lot. I'm going to go to the review session today too. I'm going to be up really late today I'm sure! I hope the exam goes well because I'm ready I just haven't had time!! I hate when I have more than one exam in one week and I have to study for the MCATs as well!!!"

Week 13:

Lamia: "I thought this week we really didn't cover much in terms of material. We are moving really slow this section and it doesn't seem like we are going to cover enough material to be tested on! Lab wasn't anything new, as I had done that lab before and not a lot of people were in class anyway because of Little 5."

Rebekah: "The chapter on the respiratory system is pretty short and straight forward. I thought the lab was interesting and helped me understand better the differences between obstructive and restrictive lung disease."

Andrew: "The respiratory information is pretty basic, i think i have a decent understanding of the material. The lab was informative as well.

Casey: "Respiratory was pretty easy, I am definetely looking forward to the test"

Amee: "I liked the lab it was interesting. The material is also very interesting and I've learned a lot."

Week 14:

Lamia: "I feel that we have moved really slow this section. However, I still went to both review sessions, which were intense but helpful. I am hoping to finish up the semester tests strong so that I am prepared for the final. We have presentations next week, which I feel are a waste of time the week before a CUMULATIVE final."

Rebekah: "This week is a test week. We haven't had as many case studies for this section so I have been preparing mostly by reading the book and reviewing what few case studies we have. I feel like there is not much information in this section which is nice but I am a little nervous about what we will be tested on. Next week our group presentations are due. We are presenting on monday, I will be glad to get it over with because I hate talking in front of people and also because then I can spend the rest of the week focusing on preparing for the cumulative final. "

Andrew: "Studying for this exam has been difficult, due to the fact that we do not have that much information to go by. I will have to use my book much more for this exam and possibly some outside sources. Our group meetings will a little longer this week i believe and we will start preparing for the final in a couple weeks.

Casey: "Their is a lot of information but I feel that I have prepared my self cery well. We met a little longer this week due to the amount of information, I hope Nilay and Adams help will come into play for the test"

Amee: "Adam and Nilay say the exam will be really straightforward and there isn't very much material so I am excited about the exam. I really hope it goes well considering it is the last exam before the final. I understand the material as well so hopefully I will be happy after the exam. I'm also nervous about the presentation. I know some groups are really making their presentations big and I did want to do a video but I think our presentation is good so hopefully everyone else will agree. I don't mind doing the presentation I just hope to get a good grade."

Week 15:

Lamia: "I think this week was wasted. Instead of learning more physiology and preparing for the exam, we had to do presentations, which really weren't useful to me. I don't feel like video presentations are appropriate for a level 400 class. I'm just ready to take the final now, with Adam and Nilay's great help."

Rebekah: "I am glad that our group gave our presentation on monday. It was nice to get it over with so that we can focus on more important things like our final. I have a lot of studying to do. I am really not too sure what the final will be like because it is not like the other tests we have been taking."

Andrew: "This week was a little bit of a disappointment, I thought we would get a little more time to review in the class setting but office hours are sunday so that will give me a chance ask the questions that i need to ask.

Casey: "This weeks was pretty wasted becasue of the team snap shots, their was no time to review in class just on sunday, I guess ill just have to make time"

Amee: "Friday was terrible and I will never forget it! Not the actually exam but the fact that I was twenty-five minutes late to the exam. I have never been so embarrassed and upset in my entire life. Adam was really nice, he said it happens to the best of us just come in and take the exam and I'll see if I can give you a little extra time. He made me feel better because I didn't even want to walk in. I was scared everyone would think I was a bad student and no one knows just how much I care about school. I was so embarrassed. Honestly, my group made me feel worse then I already did. I don't think they like me and I think they think I don't care when I probably care the most. We've been together the whole semester and they still don't know me. They completely ignored me, I didn't expect them to be sympathetic but they didn't even seem to care. I didn't even participate in the group exam because when I made a comment they ignored it so I understood that they didn't want my input. I don't know what is going on with me I didn't even hear the alarm go off. I am still incredibly upset. I think the AI also thinks I'm a bad student when... it just happened. I really wanted to gain four new friends and I did but I didn't. On to this week... we are doing presentations some people really are creative and there presentations are really good! I have enjoyed watching them."
