Portfolio of Team 9

Our Mission

The focus of this portfolio is to track the progress of team nine. We want to become a cohesive, cooperative, well-informed team whose members are able to gain a strong understanding of the physiology of the human body.

Learning to Work Together

Our team got off to a bit of a bumpy start, but we have found our groove. After trying to work in an equal manner, it became apparent that some project leadership was needed. Amy suggested that each project have its own leader with each of us rotating into the position. This way we still have an equal base, but there is someone to go to in order to add to or edit a project, and there is one person ultimately responsible for printing the project out and turning it in. There are still some minor kinks to work out, but this system is running mostly smoothly and efficiently.

Team 9 - Exam Style (From Left to Right: Amy's Hair, The Back of Dan, Michele, Melanie's Nose, Don's Side Profile)

In The Beginning

Our first group project was to write our Heart Rate Inquiry lab. Shortly within meeting as a group, we realized it would take too long to critique and write each sentence as a group. The many different ideas disrupted the general flow of the paper.

For the next projects, we assigned "project managers" to these projects. For example, Dan was the project manager for the Scientific Method report, Melanie for the Case Study report, and Don for the Library Resources Report.

For the scientific method report, we gathered all of our data and observations together. We then discussed each point of the report together. Dan typed up the report according to what was discussed, and finally the whole group edited and revised the paper.

For the library project, Don decided to distribute the five tasks of the assignment among the five members of the group. He will then assemble these 5 responses into one cohesive paper. After that we will all again edit, revise, and provide our comments about the paper.

What We Love About Team 9

Our greatest resource has been each other. With all our work at least one person has had a personal experience to add to the project and make it better, while in addition helping the rest of the group gain a new perspective.

About Us

Dan: I'm a senior studying Biology and am also in the Liberal Arts and Management Program. This fall I'm doing independent research in Myers Hall in a plant biology lab. I'm also helping an instructor in the Office of Strategic Mentoring with the hopes of beginning a tutoring/mentoring program in the chemistry department. For fun I'm learning Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and also enjoy cycling. In the academic world, I enjoy the variety of courses available at IU. P431 is the first course I've taken that specifically deals with the human body. The material sounds familiar but it will nice to learn about each system in more detail. Right now I'm applying for medical school and hope to begin a MD/MPH degree next fall. In the future, I hope to be a medical officer with the World Health Organization.

Amy: I'm also a senior majoring in biology, chemistry, and German. I am currently doing research in a biochemistry lab synthesizing novel insulin and IGF analogs. This semester I am applying to medical school.

I am taking P431 to help give me a little more background on the human body and how its systems work. This is the first class of its kind that I'm taking that is about the human body. I am excited.

Michele: I, too, am a (quasi) senior majoring in biology with minors in both chemistry and French. I decided to forego a major in French after a slightly unhappy meeting with the chair of the French department, but all in all I'm happy with the path I've chosen. Right now, I'm in the process of applying to medical schools and playing the waiting game to hear back for interviews and hopefully acceptances. When I'm not at class I'm either teaching as a UTI for L111 or playing with poopy in Armin Moczek's dung beetle lab (Melanie works there, too). I'm currently enrolled in P431 because I hope it will be a useful learning and preparatory tool for the work I will have to do in medical school.

Don: I am a senior majoring in biolgy with a minor in chemistry too. I have no idea what my plans for what I'm going to do with my major or what I'm doing after I graduate in May. I am taking P431 for two reasons: first is because it counts as both 300 lab and lecture and second because I took P200 and it was my favorite course I've taken in college.
