2.3 Overview of CaseWare Working Papers

2.3.1 CaseView - a feature that simplifies the process of computer usage

Pak Lau Professional Corporation can overcome the obstacles of paperless engagements by using CaseWare Working Papers, an application that is designed for a paperless engagement. This software features CaseView that allows employees to efficiently produce electronic documents for an engagement. According to CaseWare Working Papers User Guide, "CaseView is a word processor with spreadsheet and database capabilities. CaseView has the capability to create final financial statements, customized working papers, forms and schedules ... that are directly linked to accounting data in CaseWare Working Papers." In addition, users can import documents from almost any accounting and working papers software, Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel to CaseWare Working Papers with the document link ability. It really simplifies the process of grouping documents, which are produced from different sources, into their corresponding electronic file. Therefore, employees can create and manage documents at ease with CaseWare Working Papers as opposed to the usage of several different applications or the shuffling of tangible working papers.

2.3.2 Supervisor passwords and access right levels - securing client's data

CaseWare Working Papers also assures that data security is in place because that is a very big concern among the accounting industry. The confidentiality of client's data is extremely valuable, and any mishap can destroy the accounting firm's reputation. Quoting from CaseWare Working Papers' product profile, "Robust document and record locking mean that all your input is secure, updated and maintained within the entire organization. With our 'sign-in, sign-out' and 'check-in, check-out' features, engagement documents, including specific adjustments, can be worked on with disconnected computers and then reassembled." This means that different roles and tasks can be allocated to employees, and it strengthens the internal control structure of the accounting firm. Furthermore, a supervisor password can be created, and ten levels of access rights can be specified for various employees. Each level of access right locks certain documents, and the document becomes 'read-only.' This feature permits designated employees to accomplish tasks in preparation and completion the engagement, and restricts others to create, modify, or delete information for a task that they are not assigned to. Hence, Caseware Working Papers can effectively secure the client's data, protecting the reputation of the firm.
