Preflection on Assignment 4: Report

This report assignment is the only collaborative assignment for this course. We have to work very effectively as a group because the assignment is long and we don’t have much time. I think that our group is very efficient in terms of choosing the topic and brainstorming the supporting arguments. The introduction, three arguments, and the conclusion are assigned to each one of us and we are able to set a deadline very quickly so we will have plenty of time to put together the report.

I was assigned to write one of the supporting arguments, the contribution of Waterloo’s environment to the safety of students walking home after class. I used the problem factoring process suggested in the textbook to help me establish the argument. I question myself about the type of dangers will students walking home encounter, causes of these dangers, safety measures that can prevent these dangers. Through this process, I came up with a lot of ideas and I identified the ones that are applicable to my argument. Initially, I have a bit of trouble because some of the ideas I had are overlapping another supporting argument, Waterloo’s security system. One example is the distribution of the police stations in Waterloo. I overcome this problem by communicating with my other group members, making sure that we are not repeating our ideas different arguments.

We are not required to use factual research in our report, and I think that this can be both advantageous and disadvantageous. Since we can fabricate statistics and anecdotes, we don’t have to spend too much time doing research. However, I think that the drawback is that sometimes it is hard to develop the argument because the research is fictional. I have a hard time convincing myself about what I wrote, and the way I present my argument may not be as strong as it could have been if the research is real.
