Three Routes to Building a Scholarship of Multicultural Teaching and Learning

The University of Michigan (U-M) and core members will investigate student learning in the area of multiculturalism. The cluster will examine the effects of multicultural programming (especially interactive theatre) on faculty and student attitudes, the effect of intercultural study programs on student learning and attitudes, and the documentation of the learning that takes place in courses focused on multicultural content.

Investigating the Impact of Intercultural Exchange

How do students and faculty change as a result of participation in experiential field learning that crosses cultural boundaries?

To what extent will a university-wide multicultural program change teaching and learning across campus?

The Global Intercultural Experience for Undergraduates (GIEU) Program sends small groups of students and faculty to locations in the U.S. and around the world for 3 - 4 weeks of intercultural academic studies. The program includes intensive team-building seminars conducted prior to and after summer travel.

GIEU participants

  • Live and work in settings where the history, politics, and culture of diverse regions of the world can be readily explored;
  • Assist faculty members in multicultural field studies and projects;
  • Participate in, learn from, and explore how daily life is affected by national, political, social, and economic issues; and
  • Make a difference in intercultural understanding through collaboration, partnerships, and networks.

    Changing Campus Climate Through Interactive Theatre

    How does interactive theatre affect instructor attitudes and behaviors?

    How does exposure to research-based interactive theatre affect classroom and institutional climate?

  • The Players develop and present provocative vignettes that engage audience members in thinking and talking about pedagogy, diversity, and inclusion in the classroom.
  • All sketches are based on a solid foundation of research.
  • Following each sketch, the audience dialogues and strategizes with the actors who stay in character.
  • A trained facilitator guides this discussion and provides professional expertise and research-based information about the topic at hand.

  • What people are saying about the Players

    "This is the best workshop I've ever been to. I learned so much about teaching and teacher-student interactions in the classroom."

    "This is a great way to get people to think about and change classroom practices."

    "This is great! It is very interesting and interactive, and it demonstrated a lot of issues going on in the classroom."

    "This kind of performance is a great idea for exploring/exposing subte, unconscious issues."

    "The sketch certainly raised a lot of questions and sparked discussion. I could tell the Players did some research."
