What happens at the level of the classroom, school, and district if and when an English learner registers at your school?

A student who is registering at San Lorenzo High School must complete a registration form, which includes four questions related to the language(s) spoken by the student. The questions are as follows:

1) Which language did your child learn to speak when s/he first began to speak?

2) Which language does your child most frequently use at home?

3) What language do you use most frequently to speak to your child at home?

4) Name the language most often spoken by adults at home?

If any of the above questions are not answered by stating English, the student will be given the CELDT test which assesses his or her English Proficiency.

If the student's test score indicate that he or she is an English learner, the student must be tested by the school yearly to assess progress. When the student passes the California State Test with an average score and CELDT test, he or she will be re-classified as a Fluent English Proficient student. Once the student is classified as a FEP student, he or she may transition into mainstream classes only with a GPA 2.0 or above.

Who teaches them or provides them with other needed services?

The school has an EL coordinator and a bilingual aid. Classroom assistance at San Lorenzo High School are limited. Students are highly encouraged to request academic support from their teachers. The school has a tutorial program where students can obtain bilingual (only Spanish) support during lunch and after school.

Where do the resources (monetary and otherwise) that these services require originate?

The resources provided at San Lorenzo High School are fund by various grants. Some include specific fund that have be allocated to the school's improvement program. Other funds are from the EL budget and specific funds set into Bush's No Child Left Behind Act.
