For those taking this course that wish to upload your site project to a hosting service, so that your site will be 'published' to the internet and can be viewed from any ISP-connected browser. Your site must be accessible by entering a URL into an internet-connected web browser.* The hosting option does not have to support Domain registration (it can be a sub-domain site, with an address like 'home.comcast.net/~username'). Your websites must be functional, have no missing graphics, broken links, or obvious mistakes, and should show thought and effort towards style, and integration of subject and design. *Alternately, projects can be handed in or mailed in on disc if hosting is not set up. Free Hosting Options Comcast users: Every Comcast home internet account supports multiple sub-accounts. The primary account holder needs to log in at Comcast.net (or Charter.net) and activate their 'Personal Web Page' option, or update your secondary account to make the personal web page option active. Once this is done, the FTP settings for uploading to the remote host are: Host: upload.comcast.net name: your comcast email address psswrd: your comcast email password Charter users: Look for the help sections on Internet-Personal pages on the Charter.net home page for more info. Advertisement-Free Web Hosting This outfit promises 100 megabytes of free space: doteasy.com/ This one offers 40 megabytes of disk space- limited, but perhaps enough for some sites: members.freewebs.com/ Almost-Free Web Hosting a 35 dollar domain registration fee gets you one free year of hosting at mister.net/ Full Domain Hosting there are endless options out there, but Geekhosting offers good rates at geekhosting.com Configuring your FTP settings for upload: You will be uploading the functioning contents of your site's root folders to your chosen hosting service via FTP (file transfer protocol). Your Hosting service will provide you with FTP settings- a host directory, which sometimes comes in two parts (example: www.websitexyz.com/public_html), and a name and password. In Dreamweaver, go to 'Site-Manage Sites', create a new site (select the root folder) or select your exiting site project, and click the 'edit' button. From the categories on the left choose 'Remote Info'. Enter your FTP settings into the fields and click 'test'. If you connect successfully you can then select the files in your Files window and click the 'Put Files' button (icon of an upward arrow) to put the whole site or individual files. Re-uploading a modified file overwrites the older file on the host. There are numerous free and free trial FTP client software programs available for Mac and Windows and Linux that you can download and install on your home computers that can be used to upload your files to your remote hosting service, too. Google 'FTP client' and your computer platform to find FTP software. Unfortunately, HCC students will have to make a connection outside the school (the campus network has blocks on what sort of connections can be made)
