University of Wisconsin System:

Creating a Multi-Institutional Framework for Advancing the Practice of Teaching and Learning Through Scholarly Inquiry into Student Learning

The University of Wisconsin System was honored to co-sponsor The 2006 CASTL Colloquium on the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning: Evidence, Impact and Momentum

The Colloquium was held at the Madison Concourse Hotel in Madison, Wisconsin on Saturday, April 1, 2006 and Sunday April 2, 2006.

Over 370 national and international participants (the largest number of Colloquium participants to date) met to share the numerous ways that SoTL has impacted their classrooms and continues to positively affect university culture. Faculty, administrators, and students attended and presented at this event.

Co-sponsored by: The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, The University of Wisconsin System (UWS) Office of Professional and Instructional Development (OPID) and the UWS Leadership Site for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning

Our Vision

To create a multi-institutional collaborative structure and process for advancing the practice of teaching and learning through scholarly inquiry into student learning

Our Goals

1. Bring groups and individuals together across traditional barriers of departments, disciplines, roles,(faculty/student, faculty/staff) and institutional type to work collaboratively on developing new knowledge in the practice of teaching

2. Bring about a cultural shift in the way teaching is rewarded at the department, college, and institutional levels

3. Create exemplars of SoTL work in diverse settings across campuses

4. Encourage individuals and groups to broaden their perspective of SoTL in order to address campus and system initiatives and priorities more effectively

5. Work directly with those units on campus that are responsible for faculty development and teaching improvement to connect their work to SoTL principles and practices

6. Help individuals integrate their existing exploration of teaching and learning into the scholarship of teaching and learning

7. Help campus groups (departments, programs, committees, etc.) connect their work to SoTL principles and practices

UW System Leadership Site

The UW-Milwaukee Center for Instructional and Professional Development (CIPD) houses one of the twelve Carnegie/AAHE national leadership sites in SoTL work. Directed by Dr. Renee Meyers (Communication), the site coordinates SoTL work across the UW System campuses and connects faculty and campuses to this national initiative.

UW La Crosse: Lesson Study Project

This is the third year that the UW- La Crosse Lesson Study project has been funded. The project is made up of small disciplinary based groups of instructors who design, teach, observe, evaluate and revise a "research lesson" throughout an academic year. Sixty instructors from 13 academic departments are involved in lesson study groups. This year the project intends to increase participation among departments that are not yet involved. Additionally, the project director with assistance from another faculty member will develop tools, materials, activities and strategies intended to improve the quality of lesson study inquiry, and support lesson study as a self-sustaining SoTL activity. Some of these new SoTL training activities include: a how-to do lesson study workshop; a writing residency; and the development of a peer review process.

UW Colleges: Increasing Student Understanding Regarding the Nature of Scientific Inquiry

The UW Colleges Biological Sciences Department SoTL research proposal contends that, "most of the population appears to continue to judge the debate between teaching evolution and creationism in the classroom as a "fairness" platform, demonstrating a pervasive lack of understanding regarding how scientific inquiry generates the theories that guide our understanding of the natural world." In response to this lack of understanding, this team of faculty members will focus on increasing student awareness about scientific inquiry by investigating the following questions: 1) What do students understand or misunderstand about the nature of scientific inquiry as they enter the classroom? 2) What teaching approaches best address those misconceptions? Results will be presented at campus workshops designed to educate middle and high school teachers statewide. Two faculty members well versed in SoTL research will serve as consultants throughout this project.

The SoTL Resource Center Website

The purpose behind the creation and deployment of the SoTL Resource Center is to provide an integrated platform for the delivery of current, fully accessible SoTL resources. The dynamic technology stresses our responsiveness to the changing nature of SoTL scholarship. Users can browse many resources including: SoTL publications, SoTL publication outlets, our whitepages, past and present UW System campus SoTL projects; links to national resources. This site also provides many interactive features. Please visit us at http://www.sotl.uwm.edu

Our Mission

To increase knowledge about the practice of scholarly inquiry into teaching and learning on all UW campuses, supplement campus SoTL work, support intercampus collaboration in SoTL work, and actively work to develop a core of faculty from across the system who are experts in classroom inquiry practices and principles
