  • Tools for Creating Evaluation Rubrics

    45 Minutes : The first set of free tools we will examine are tools for generating evaluative rubrics. You will find four blank rubrics in your packet. We will also look at online tools, which you should use in addition to the printed rubrics.

    Evaluating a Free Online Tool
    Scroll down and enter rubric ID #1064561 to see the rubric. We will edit the rubric as a group using the projection screen.

    This is an interactive rubric. Results can be accessed by the creator of the rubric.

    Gathering & Storing Tools

    45 Minutes : We will work in groups to evaluate tools in the four content areas:

  • Bookmark Tools
  • Photo Storage and Sharing Tools
  • Online Document Sharing
  • Curriculum Design and Lesson Planning

    Quick Activity Tools

    20 Minutes - Use any one of the survey tools below to create a mini-survey or poll.

    45 Minutes - We will use a Cool Tool called S.L.A.T.E from the Landmark Project to organize our evaluation of other tools. Click S.L.A.T.E. 6603 to access the interactive worksheet. Use "cooltool" as the password (enter it in the upper right corner of the window). Links to the tools can also be found in the navigation bar on the Cool Tools Workshop support site.



    Quiz-Making Tools

    15 Minutes - Log in to and take the one of Oz Quizzes to which your fill find a links on the right. Use extra time to search the site for another quiz activity. Evaluate the site from the point of view of the student user.

    25 Minutes - use one of the tools below to make a short quiz based upon the content provided in your packet and on the Cool Tools Workshop website.

    Normally a survey tool, this can be used to create quick quizzes with e-mail responses.


    Hunts, Quests and Inquiries

    We will take a quick look at excellent 5 tools for creating web-based learning experiences.

  • Hunts - resource lists, treasure hunts, samplers and other focused information-gathering activities built upon a central theme, content area or question
  • Quests - the WebQuest, created by Bernie Dodge, combines collaboration, simulation and research focused upon an essential question.
  • Inquiry - we will look at 2 tools for inquiry-based learning, both of which can be used in a single class session.
  • For this session, we will be guided by a NiceNet class site. Follow the link below. Sites that we will visit are also listed in the panel to the right.

    Course Content Management Tools

    The workshop will end with a longer look at 4 tools for managing courses, projects, lessons and collaborations. We will be evaluating them both as student and as teacher. Following a brief introduction to the tools not already experienced as part of this workshop, participants will be encouraged to explore one of the tools in depth, seeking ways in which to combine its use with other tools introduced today.

    Participants are encouraged to share their insights and by adding a message to the NiceNet class board.

    This free tool generates .html code to add to a web page. I have here used it to create a separate web page. It is also possible to paste the code into an interactive text field in a blog or web page editor.

    Photo Storage and Editing Tools

    If you wish, use the images (photos and miscellaneous .jpg and .gif images) on the workshop CD's to test these tools. You can also experiment with images downloaded from the web. Consider the following:

  • How easy is it for others to view the images?
  • Does each image have a discrete URL?
  • How much annotation is possible?
  • What editing and transformation tools are available?
  • What options are available for posting images?
