Background Information

Ken and Cheryl are both proponents of Introductory Statics courses based on active learning utilizing real-world data and technology. They expect students to communicate statistics in context and be critical readers of text that employs statistics. Both are Writing Across the Curriculum Faculty (WACy Faculty) and co-leads for the Math Department assessment efforts at College of San Mateo. These interests coalesced in this project. Rich discussions with and feedback from other WAC and Math faculty have contributed to the development of these projects. Writing faculty contributed greatly to progress toward development of clear writing prompts and meaningful grading rubrics. Discussions with other Math faculty have provided technical feedback and ideas for further "tweaking" of the assignments. Discussions in the assessment arena lead to the incorporation of reflections upon "lessons learned" and "progress toward learning outcomes" as a result of completion of these projects.
