Reflection on Assignment 3: Persuasive Message

From this persuasive message assignment, I learned that it is important to do an audience analysis before writing the message. Since everyone's needs differ, everyone will respond differently to the message. A strong persuasive message is closely connected to the audience's existing desires and interests. By doing thorough research, I can inform the customer about the benefits of the product that suits the customer's needs. In addition, supportive evidence such as statistics and anecdotes can effectively establish credit, and the customer will feel that I am reliable, and I'm not trying to mislead them.

According to the AIDA plan, I have to write an attractive attention getter, build up interest and desire, and urge a quick action from the reader because the persuasive message is a sales letter. I think the most challenging part of writing the persuasive message is creating the attention getter. The attention getter is the first paragraph that the potential customer will read from the letter. The reader will not bother to read the rest of the letter if it cannot grab the attention of the reader. In my assignment, I raised the issue of the cost of energy consumption by asking some thought-provoking questions to catch the eye of the reader. The goal of maintaining the reader's interest can be accomplished by providing information about customer benefit. I proceeded to provide statistics about the cost savings of using the occupancy sensor light system. To strengthen my argument, I also gave an example of how the state of Connecticut effectively reduced annual costs of energy consumption by using the system. I tried to persuade the reader that the occupancy sensor lighting system is desirable by providing a description of its functions. Finally, I provided details on how the system can be ordered easily in order to urge the reader to take action. Therefore, I think that careful planning and thorough research are essential in writing a sound persuasive message.
