Human Trafficking: An Invisable Connection to Modern Day Slavery

Journalism and Media Studies

Project Abstract

My Project is on human trafficking. The arguments I made are if people are aware and knowledgable of human trafficking it would decrease the amount of victims trafficked a year? I will also argue that the media plays an important role in promoting the awareness of human trafficking.

Project Context & Contributions

Human Trafficking is a global issue in which men and women usually under the age of eighteen are forced into a world of sex trade. The countries with the highest amounts of human trafficking are third-world countries where the people live in poverty.Victims of trafficking are usually deceived by being offered a great job opportunity in the bigger cities, or being sold by a family member and or even kidnapped without a trace.

The significance of my research is to promote, bring awareness and attention to subject of human trafficking. In light of thousands of victims being trafficked a year, my goal is to educate and make people socially aware of what human trafficking is.

Project Format

The final form my project took is a traditional reserach paper.

Research Questions

If people were more aware and knowledgable on human trafficking it would decrease the amount of victims being trafficked a year?

How does Human Trafficking Affect the local communities?

What is Trafficking?

What is being done to help victims of Human Trafficking?

What are the policies of Human Trafficking?

How big is the problem?

Where Can Trafficking be found?

Since the post-tsunami has there been an increase of Human Trafficking?

What are the componets within Human Trafficking?

What are the reasons for Human Trafficking?

Key Findings

During my reserach I found that there have been a lot of media specials on human trafficking, as it brought awareness and attention to the topic. Some key findings are that of how much a trafficker makes, as human trafficking is the third largest industry within the black market next to drugs and weapons. Anti-human trafficking groups and rehab centers are taking victims in as they escape the life of a slave.

These findings help to answer my research questions because it relates to the subject of how the media brings awareness to the public. The overrall significants of what I found during my in-dept research is, even though people may be knowledgable of what human traffickign is. It does not decrease the amount of victims being trafficked.

The new question that raises is how the victims self-esteem is affected once trafficked? How rehabilitation and foundations help victims to overcome such tramatic expereinces?

Evidence

Human Trafficking is a global issue which victims are lured by job opportunities, sold by family or kidnapped. The purpose of this research is to examine what the media is doing to promote awareness to help decrease human trafficking. Maria who is a former victim of human trafficking reveals in her testimony insight of the trails and tribulations in which she faced as a victim of trafficking. Her experience reports how trafficking affected her mental health as well as motivating her to do something to help other victims like her-self. Her story comprises of her working in brothels as a sex slave, not being fed, and having 10-30 clients a day even while menstruating. Her story shows how she was manipulated by the exploiters and threatened if she were to escape by being beaten, raped or even killed.

With more attention being brought by the media and the government I will also being using Human Trafficking: Better Data, Strategy, and Reporting Needed to Enhance U.S. Anti trafficking Efforts Abroad: GAO-06-825. By: Melito, Thomas. GAO Reports, 8/14/2006, p1, 69p; (AN 22027020) I will use this as a source to identify different strategies for combating trafficking as well as comparing the data of trafficking with other countries. A historical and ethical analysis will be used in this research to look deeper into the issue of human trafficking. The historical analysis will be used to trace how long trafficking has been a global issue while the ethical analysis will show the experiences of the victims.
