Where I Began II expected more time in th clasroom, more reading of subject matter, curriculum planning and lesson plans were part of my expectations. I knew very little about The Underground Railroad, and I simply wanted to learn more. I

Workshop Learnings I learned that the residents of Central Pennsylvania were very involved in The Underground Railroad. Everyone ,to a lesser or greater degree, was affected by the institution of slavery. The involvement of African Americans in the success off Underground Railroad was uplifting. I'd like to take what I've learned to my principal, possibly the superintendent.

Introducing the Lesson The old Negro Slaves whispered that quilts tell a story. We leave tonight, or a run-away slave is near. Grade Level: First/Second Teacher of Lesson: Sylvia Harris Introduction/Background: This lesson combines information about quilt patterns and identifying geometric shapes. Materials Textiles ( square and triangle, colored tiles )1 inch grid papergraph paper for student recordingcolored pencilsScissorsPattern sheetsProcedures: 1. Introduce the pattern and give historical background information 2. Model how to recreat the pattern by having students come up and tape tiles to grid paper that you haved taped on the board. 3. Record in math log when completed. Evaluation: Evaluate by observation and checking math log. Re - teach/ Extension: 1. Students will have the opportunity to work with a variety of patterns that are at different skill l evels and come from a wide range of cultures 2. Have students put their patterns together to make a large quilt. 3. Have students create their own paterns and then exchange with a partner.
