...or is it?

We presented to the Headteacher of our school on the 4th May 2005. This Powerpoint presentation was a part of this presentation.

What is the focus of our investigation?

  • To examine and assess the use of objectives in Modern Foreign language lessons.
  • To investigate and promote the use of student research in school.
  • To find the best way to present and use objectives in a lesson.

  • This box is to explain to you what the system of "rouge, orange and vert"is:

Alex and Shane: How and why are we involved?

We first got involved at Westwood St Thomas after stumbling across Mrs Riding s Diary of being a Gifted and Talented co-ordinator. It gave Mrs Riding the inspiration to get pupils involved in her research, and invited us along to every meeting and training day that she possibly could!

So it seemed natural that when we moved to Bishops Mrs Riding call on our assistance and experience.

What resources have we found helpful?

We have found that giving questionarres to our class members helped us to decide how best to present an objective. Here are some questions from our questionarres:

What is the purpose of an objective

When did you find having the odjective shown to you the most useful

We have found this internet site very useful to put all our research results together and also that other teachers may benefit from our results.

    What results have emerged?

Results that have emerged from our research of one tutor group have been:

  • Students like having objectives just after register in the lesson and then have it repeated to them just before they start the activity.
  • The students find that having an objective in a lesson allows them to have a target for what they should be learning.
  • Students prefer to have their objective in english, so that they can understand the lesson easier and get to work quicker.
  • Our group have found that this project is a good way to get to know our teachers better (in this case Mrs Riding) and also to find out more about the subject.

  • What have we gained from our lesson?

Earlier last week our group (the students) had our own french lesson, we used objectives and rouge, orange vert and normal things that Mrs Riding normally does in the lesson ie: checking if pupils understood what they were doing or if they had any problems.

Thinking back: What have we gained (from the point of the students)

From this project we have gained many things here are some of them:

    We have improved:

  • our team-working skills
  • our I.T skills
  • and also our understanding of what the teachers put into a lesson and how they are structured

  • What was our approach to the investigation and what evidence have we gathered?

Our approach to the investigation was to find out if using objectives in lessons was an effective or ineffective way of learning and even if it improved it.

The evidence we have gathered has come soley from taking notes ie: recording objectives and end of class rouge, orange, vert. The other evidence has come from questionaires which we have edited a few times so that students can give more open answers (which is a more effective way of getting research from students).

    Examples of our work

    We have been researching good ways of teaching in French lessons. We have interviewed some boys about the ways they like to be taught French. We have focused on the objectives in lessons, on the form they should be in, i.e. English, French, orally. To see how boys thought the last lesson had gone, we used a rouge/orange/vert, or red/orange/green, system, with rouge being negative, orange being alright and green being positive. We handed out a questionnaire to see what the boys thought about different things concerning the objectives.This is a copy;

    1. Do you understand what an objective is?

    2. What is the purpose of an objective?

    3. Can you give the objective for todays lesson?

    4. Did the lesson allow you to achieve the objective? Explain why.

    5. What was the form of the objective today;

    A. In French B. In English C. In both D. Orally?

    6. Do you like having objectives in the lesson?

    7. When do you find having the objective the most useful?

    A. After the starter activity B. At the very beginning of the lesson C. In the middle of the lesson.

    8. To what extent was this lesson successful for you as a learner?

    A. Very B. Partially C. No why?

    9. To what extent have you made progress in this lesson?

    1(none)-5(lots)

    10. What colour i.e. rouge/orange/vert were you in this lesson?

We handed out about 20 of these questionnaires to people who had different colours from rouge/orange/vert to see if their answers were different. This was to help us to make conclusions at the end of the project. Once we had found out these things we took a lesson ourselves to see whether what people preferred would help them in a lesson. We did the objective in English because that is what most people preferred on the questionnaire.
