Critical Thinking

Critical Thinking

Critical thinking is an important part of looking at history through different medias such as books, television and film. Different people interpret history in different ways depending on how they obtain their information. One must be able to look past the biases and the false statments and determain the truth for themselves. through HIST 200 students learn to develop their critical thinking skills through the study of historical films.

Reflection

The HIST 200 course has tought me how to look at history and question the representaion of it on the screen. One must ask questions such as why this film was created and who is the audience. Also there must be a look taken into the historical facts and biases of the film. The Hollywoodization of history must be taken into account and therefore films of historical content must be looked at critically.

Resources

There is much more to film review than that of watching a movie and stating whether or not you liked it. To look into film one must look at other resources. Some very valuable resources that I have found are government documents, journal articles and newspapers from the time the film was made or the time the film was about. Another resource that may be useful is other films from the period that the film is about. This could help slightly with biases and inconsistancies.
