Summer Workshop for High School Teachers effort led by Mandana Sassanfar Taking advantage of the fact that Graham Walker is both Program Director of the MIT HHMI Undergraduate Education Program and an HHMI Professor, members of the Education Group were able to develop a partnership program between the department of Biology and High School science teachers from the Greater Boston Area. For the past 3 years over 25 teachers from 18 school districts were able to participate in various activities at MIT. Since July of 2002, science teachers have attended a 5-day summer workshop that includes faculty lectures and hands-on laboratory exercises. In the summer of 2003, the teachers were involved in the HHMI-DVD project, and in the summer of 2004 several teachers became actively involved in reviewing lab protocols and teaching some of the laboratory exercises. The unique format of the teacher's workshop allows for close interaction between teachers and MIT faculty and provide an invaluable networking among the science teachers. The summer workshop is followed by 2 meeting during the school year where teachers meet with Graham Walker and Mandana Sassanfar to discuss the use of the lab protocols provided during the previous summer workshop and choose topics for the following summer workshop. These same teachers have the opportunity to bring their classes to MIT during the year for a class field trip and to invite MIT biology graduate students to visit their class.
