Students Describe Their Learning

For their final exam in the writing class, students in the spring learning community were asked to explain what they learned in the course. Most students discussed at length what they had learned about joining clauses with connectors. As we recorded their final card tests on video, we asked if they thought the exercise had been valuable. All students indicated that they had learned a great deal.

  • In her final paper, Charlene Williams comments: "These type of words really helped me because when I would write, I would write what I was saying, which wasn't a good thing."
  • Ana Ramirez states: "I also learned how to use subordinating clauses. This particular topic is kind of hard for me because subordinating clauses have other clauses."
  • Although their papers, like Cesar Cortes' to the right, show the need for continuing study, all of the students in the learning community gained a basic understanding of clause structure and as a result began to write much more confident, competent and coherent papers.
