Students enrolled in this law class have several opportunities to earn extra credit, some based on assignments that are specific to the co-curricular Political Engagement Lecture Series. This snapshot presents three representative assignments, each linked to a lecture.

What are the extra credit assignments?

Taking Action: How Students Can Make an Impact (6:00 - 8:00pm)

Sandi Vito, Deputy Secretary of Labor for Pennsylvania, will moderate this panel discussion with guests Jordan Marks and Sheila Ballen. The panelists will engage students in conversations about how to take political action to make an impact on their communities, ranging in size from the local campus to the broader national and international landscape.

EXTRA CREDIT: To earn extra credit you need to go to this event, sign in (ULTRA credit provided). Then write a one-two page paper connecting what you learn at this to any issue we have studied in class, and explaining how you could use what you learned to make an impact on that issue. Email your paper before ARGO (student newspaper) covers the story.

Challenging Racial Profiling: Attacking Jim Crow on the Highway (6:00-7:30pm)

William H. Buckman, civil rights attorney and Stockton graduate, will discuss his successful legal challenges to racial profiling by law enforcement on the NJ Turnpike. Bill is a national expert on racial profiling and has received numerous awards from civil rights and social justice organizations for his work.

The Prisoners Behind the Hoods: Making Pictures about Abu Ghraib (2:30-3:30pm)

A Talk by Philadelphia Artist Daniel Heyman who has interviewed, and made pictures, of prisoners released from Abu Ghraib. He will be talking about political engagement by artists.

Attention Shoppers! Is Wal-Mart Selling Women Short?(6:00 - 8:00 pm)

Liza Featherstone, author of Selling Women Short: The Landmark Battle for Workers' Rights at Wal-Mart, will focus on the sex discrimination lawsuit against Wal-Mart, the largest private sector employer in the U.S. today. She will discuss the ethical obligations of employers and alternative strategies (boycotts, lawsuits, etc) for consumers, workers and other citizens to ensure socially responsible behavior

What results have emerged?

Attendance at each lecture series event has increased, as evidenced by the sign-in sheets. Students who attend benefit from what they learn at the lecture and how they connect this knowledge to the extra credit assigments.
